While our decision to walk from Bryant Park to the Lower East Side (about 40 blocks) on that cold, wintry NYC night was not the wisest, our choice to eat at Vanessa’s Dumpling House (picked by my friend Danny) couldn’t have been better.
$4 will buy you four dumplings, a sandwich (made with the tastiest sesame pancake bread) and a beverage (no alcohol here). Both of us decided on the pork and chive dumplings and when it came time for me to select a sandwich, suffering from a preoccupation with a hand of burning fingers that were thawing, I went with pork and chive again. Danny at least decided to switch things up, choosing a duck sandwich. You place your order at the counter, pay and then one of the little Chinese ladies calls your number when everything is ready (I wondered if you could hire these speedy mini-cooks for dinner parties at home). Also while we waited for our numbers to be called I wondered which one was Vanessa/if she even exists.
